Niels van der Laan LL.M. particularly focuses on financial (economic) criminal law, specialising in bankruptcy fraud. Van der Laan maintains good contact with international criminal lawyers, especially in the U.S., and is considered to be an expert in the field of international criminal law (including surrender and extradition). Furthermore, he is still regularly active in the general criminal practice, where he has represented clients in several notorious murder cases. Van der Laan also litigates in the Supreme Court in appeal cases. Van der Laan gives speeches both at home and abroad and lectures at several educational establishments. He mainly lectures in the field of pre-trial detention. Additionally he has published in several professional journals and he is editor for the section the bar-section  in the legal journal Delikt en Delinkwent. Van der Laan is one of the founders of the Dutch Association of Young Criminal Defence Lawyers, of which he was vice-president.
